What is a Supermoon?

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

The Supermoon is when the moon is the closest it will ever been in the calendar year. A supermoon occurs approximately every 411 days, in average every 14 months, meaning at least once a year. also known as perigee-syzygy.

What does perigee-syzygy mean?

Perigee simply means the closest point to earth in the moon’s monthly orbit. That happens once every month due to the moon's slightly egg-shaped orbit around earth.

Syzygy refers to when the sun, earth and moon are all aligned. That happens twice every month, at New Moon (when the moon is between the sun and the earth) and at Full Moon (when the earth is between the sun and the moon).

Supermoon

A Supermoon always happens on a New Moon or Full Moon. On the New Moon we might not see the moon, but the energy is just as strong, if not stronger than the full moon. Never underestimate the power of the dark moon.

As for a Super Full Moon, it is more apparent to the naked eye. It then appears to be about 16 times brighter and 7% bigger than a regular full moon. Definitely a lot of extra moon energy to work with.

Tidal waves are also higher than on regular New Moon and Full Moon's. Some astrologers even have speculated that Supermoon's are responsible for natural disasters. Others don't consider a moon to be a supermoon that is not under 360'000 km away from earth. Even so, the energy is still felt strongly on Earth.

How to harness the energy of a Supermoon

Use this super-charged energy for your ritualistic practices. On a Supermoon is when energy is the most heightened, emotions are being amplified and expressions intensified. Energy is the strongest on a night before/after or on the actual Supermoon. This would be the ideal time to create ritual, meditate, journal, do vision work and sit in ceremony.

Supermoon Rituals

  • Shadow work and inner healing - journal what you are ready to release, heal and integrate on the Supermoon.

  • Visualization practices/vision work by reciting affirmations/mantras, journaling your visions, creating vision boards

  • Sit in ceremony with yourself/friends/sisters for 3 nights or for at least one night on either the supermoon itself, or a night before/after

  • Charge your crystals, altar objects on the Super Full Moon

  • Create moon water on the Super Full Moon and let it be charged by golden light

  • Take a moon bathing walk dressed in white to absorb the moon's light.
