Persephone was known as the Goddess of fertility, harvest and as the Queen of the Underworld. According to Greek mythology, whenever Persephone would leave the upperworld for the underworld to be with her husband, the King of the Underworld, Hades her mother, Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture would mourn her absence. The longing for her daughter was so strong that fertility on earth would remain scarce, creating the seasons of autumn and winter. During her absence, the warm weather would remain absent until her release in spring.
There is indeed a sense of nostalgia in Autumn. Equal to the loss Demeter (also known as Ceres) felt for her daughter. We slowly come down from the social bubbly summer, all the long summer days and nights, and now enter into a new energy of stillness. The season of Autumn is associated with the Wild Woman energies. She is the Priestess, the Magician, the Witch who knows how to transmute and transmit energy balancing the light and the dark. She fears not her own darkness. She is the one you go to when in need of deep healing and lifting of the veil between the worlds.
Our energies from what it was turned so extremely outwards during the spring and summer has now found its way back inwards. Creeping further and further into our souls looking at the depth of all that we are from within. In Wicca culture, Mabon or Autunmal Equinox is typically the time to honor the changing seasons. Honoring the equal day and night, since the Summer Solstice the daylight has been slowly decreasing and the nights lengthening. Autumn is a transitional season. Its energies is brought forth to experience deep release and change. Just like nature is experiencing release in many ways, so do we. Everything on a macro level is also felt on a micro level. One affects the other - as one can not exist without the other. The leaves are changing all the different shades of color, yellow, orange, dark red, red, brown and shedding from the branches. They are falling hence the name of the season. Nature is preparing for its winter slumber and discerning the weight of what is no longer needed.
Equally, we turn our energies inwards and ask ourselves: What can I keep? What is ready to be shed and let go of? What do I desire to leave behind? There is a sense of gratitude for all that the harvest season had to offer end of summer for our fall/winter season. What are harvesting this autumn? What thanks are giving?
Autumn's energetics is the one of deep transformation as we:
create for organization and structure after the summer season during the virgo season.
clean the slates in terms of relationships during libra season.
experience deep healing and transformation during scorpio season.
Nature is showing us how to go about release. how beautiful it can be as a symbiotic dance with Earth. That release does not need to be hard. There might be a hint of sadness, maybe even gentle regret, but doesn't sadness have its own side of beauty?
Honor this season of fall by bringing in symbols of autumn:
pumpkins in different shapes and forms
leaves collected from walks
go on long walks in the forest and admire the changing colors
make a list of all that you are grateful for this year so far
write down what you are ready to transform and release this autumn
decorate your altar with autumn symbols
